Lower Alabama Parrot Head Club Minutes
September 2011
Club President, Kim Dahlgren at LuLu’s Restaurant called the meeting to order at 11:24 AM, September 10, 2011
Present were 46 members and 1 guest/potential member
TREASURER’S REPORT – Jane Tarver submitted the Treasurer’s Report. Balance forward was $2,555.76. Income/deposits were  $211.00 including raffle, dues, and tee shirt sales. Expenses were $139.50 leaving a balance of $2,627.26. The charity account balance is $184.50.
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA PH CLUB CRUISE – There will be a PH cruise out of New Orleans from January 15 thru 21. The event also includes 3 days in New Orleans prior to the cruise. Larry and Sharon Ramirez have all the information.
COASTAL CLEAN-UP – Will be on September 17th this year with the great party at Kim’s afterward. Mark your calendars. In her absence, Hurricane Jane was elected food chairperson and new member Angie Schumacher volunteered to be event chair.   Jim & Jennie Curtis have volunteered their boat to ferry us to/from the islands.  Thank you Capt. Jim.  Late News:  The weather was perfect and the cleanup was great.  Special thanks to Angie for arranging all the food, to Hurricane Jane for getting everything situated and to Chef Tyler – the brats and burgers were delicious.
MS Bike Tour – September 24th and 25th.  We will be at the finish line at the new Hampton Inn in Orange Beach.  It begins at 9:00 and should end by 3:00.   Arrive about 8:30. We will have 2 shifts each day:  9:00am – 12:00PM and 12PM – 3:0PM.  A sign up sheet was distributed at the meeting.  Kim will e-mail more info.   We will “lei” the riders on Sunday.  Angie & Rod Schumacker have offered to contribute more leis to supplement the ones we have.  Late News:  The ride was great.  Many of the riders stopped to thank us on their way out Sunday.  They loved getting “leied” – some were still wearing their leis when they left the hotel.  Some that we missed even came back to get their lei.  At the end of the event, they had a lot of left over food (bananas, apples, bread) that the MS Bike Tour people very generously donated to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.  Thanks to Angie and Rod for transporting the food to the zoo.
SHRIMP FESTIVAL – October 13, 14 and 15. Plane Jane has chaired this event in the past and will do so again. We will be working Thursday and Saturday. They are 4-hour shifts and we will have to wear the Shrimpfest T-shirts, not our PH shirts.  Also we are not allowed to drink during our shifts. ABC may be checking. Plane Jane still needs volunteers for the 10 to 2 Saturday shift, the 6-10 Saturday shift, and the 6-10 Thursday shift. Contact her to volunteer.
WONDERFUL WACKY WOMEN – Because we are so good at it, this organization has asked us to help them with their silent auction event. The event will be at the Flora-Bama on October 29th. We will help them set-up and run the auction. Some of our PH members are also in that organization.
STARS – Thursday March 17th thru Sunday March 20, 2012.  The event is completely sold out.  It was sold out in 10 days!!  If you did not get registered, do not despair.  The Friday night event at the Flora-Bama and the Saturday event at LuLu’s are both open to the public.  You do have to pay a cover at the Bama, if you are not registered.   Some of the headliners will be Brent Burns, Bill White, Sunny Jim, Jim Morris and John Friday.
Start collecting items to donate for our Silent Auction baskets, raffles and t-shirt logos.
Lost Bay Farm in Lillian, AL:  Tommy & Judy Rosemond brought to our attention that this horse farm was severely damaged by a recent tornado.  It was voted to donate $300 to help in their recovery.
MEETING OF THE MINDS  Key West – It is now sold out (3,500 tickets). We understand that about 16 of our members will be attending.
NOMINATIONS –Nominations were taken for charities we would wish to donate our STARS charity fund to. The nominations are:  Literacy Counsel, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Orange Beach Volunteer Fire Dept., Gulf Shores Volunteer Fire Dept., Christian Services, Boys Ranch, and Mary’s Shelter.   A suggestion was made to have only two (2) charities listed for STARS.  The nominations (and quantity) will be voted on at the next meeting.
Angie and Don Schumacker donated the fruitcake basket.  It included a great parrot wood carving along with a basket of goodies.  The winners of the basket were Steve and Vicki Burand.
** Member Don Chambers is riding his Motorcycle (hog) to NYC for the 9/11 commemoration ceremonies
**Jerry Diaz and Trio will be at LuLu’s on Sunday, September 11 at 5PM.  Come on out and enjoy the music.
**Keep saving pop-tops for Ronald McDonald House.
