Lower Alabama Parrot Head Club Minutes

October 2011

Club President Kim Dahlgren at Lulu’s Restaurant called the meeting to order at 11:34 AM, October 8, 2011

Present were 67 members and 3 guests/potential member

TREASURER’S REPORT – Jane Tarver submitted the Treasurer’s Report. Balance forward was $2,627.26. Income/deposits were  $341.00 including raffle, dues, and tee shirt sales. Expenses were $435.18 leaving a balance of $2,533.08. The charity account balance is $244.50.

CENTRAL OKLAHOMA PH CLUB CRUISE – There will be a PH cruise out of New Orleans from January 15 thru 21. The event also includes 3 days in New Orleans prior to the cruise. Larry and Sharon Ramirez have all the information.

COASTAL CLEAN UP - We had a very successful beach clean up on September 17th. We had a great member turn-out for the clean-up of the islands and the party at Kim and Tyler’s afterward. The club logged 142 hours of volunteer time during the clean-up.

MS BIKE TOUR – We assisted the organizers of the bike tour in making this a fun event. We assisted on September 24th and 25th. The riders enjoyed getting “leied” by our members at the finish line.  The club logged 92 hours of volunteer time during the bike ride.  Special thanks to Rod and Angie Schumacker who helped deliver the food left over from the bike ride to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.

SHRIMP FESTIVAL – October 13, 14 and 15. Plane Jane, chair of this event, distributed the Shrimp Fest t-shirts to the volunteers. We will be working Thursday evening and all day Saturday. They are 4-hour shifts and we will have to wear the Shrimp Fest T-shirts, not our PH shirts. Also we are not allowed to drink during our shifts. ABC may be checking. Jane is pleased by the amount of club volunteers for this event. There may still be spots if you are interested in working on Thursday and Saturday. There will be 10 to 12 workers for each 4-hour shift.  Our tips will once again benefit Toys for Boys and Girls with support from the Orange Beach Ladies Auxiliary in Orange Beach.

WONDERFUL WACKY WOMEN – Because we are so good at it, this organization has asked us to help them with their silent auction event. The event will be at the Flora-Bama on October 29th. We will help them set-up and run the auction. Some of our PH members are also in that organization. Jimmie Sue is asking that our volunteers be there at 8:00 Saturday morning. A walk/run race is scheduled to begin at 9:30. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society and the Ronald McDonald House.

BOO AT THE ZOO – We will be volunteering at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo for their Halloween event on October 27.  We will conduct the Krispy Kreme Krunch booth.  The object is to eat a KK on a string without using your hands.  This event is scheduled to begin at 4PM and end at 6PM.  It is only for the kids age 10 and under.

Another Cruise:  Several club members are going on a Carnival Conquest Cruise out of New Orleans in January.  Seven days, with ports of call being Key West, Freeport, Grand Bahamas and Nassau.   This is not a sanctioned “Parrot Head Cruise”, but just one to have phun with some phun club members.  It does piggy-back to Pardi Gras in New Orleans.  Some members are spending extra days in the Big Easy to attend Pardi Gras.  If you think you would like to go on this water adventure, please call Dave Grear  (251-923-8256) or Jackie Grear (251-923-8258)

STARS – Thursday, March 15th thru Sunday March 18th, 2012.  The event sold out in 10 days!  But do not despair - two of the events are open to everybody.  Friday night everybody will gather at the Flora Bama for some great music.  If you are not registered, all you have to do is pay the cover and come have some phun.  On Saturday, March 17, is LuLu’s in the morning.  As always, LuLu’s is open to the public – no cover.    Some of the headliners will be Brent Burns, Bill White, Sunny Jim, Jim Morris and John Friday.  To see a complete line up of the entertainers, please go to www.starsfellonalabama.org.

We do need to start collecting items to donate for our Silent Auction.  If you collect items, the club has a storage shed that they can be stored in.  Just let Kim know.  The raffle has changed.  Each of the 4 sponsoring clubs will donate 4 or 5 raffle items with an approximate value of $50.  Two of these will be liqueur baskets.  We have two raffle bags from last year (the winners did not pick them up) – so we will just dust these off and use them.  In January, we will begin collecting the items for the liqueur baskets – so if you get any as a Christmas gift that you do not like, you have a place to regift it.

We have chosen the organizations that will benefit from STARS.  The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, the Literacy Council, the Orange Beach Volunteer Fire Department and the Gulf Shores Volunteer Fire Department.  The total amount that we received from STARS will be divided three (3) ways.  The first two organizations will get one third each and the Fire Departments will split the remaining third.

As discussed, we have a $10,000 commitment to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.  We purchased a “Founder’s Rock” last year and put $1,000 towards it.  We will have to give them $1,000 for the next 9 years.  The Lower Alabama Parrot Heads will forever be Founder’s of the new zoo.

MEETING OF THE MINDS Key West – It is now sold out (3,500 tickets). We understand that about 16 of our members will be attending.  For the members that do not get to attend, we will live vicariously through them.  What happens in Key West, stays in Key West.

Social Committee – Sharon Ramirez and Jenny Curtis sent a sign-up sheet for a “Coconut Telegraph” within the club for planned and impromptu social events. It is important to understand that this is to be used for member info passing only, No political jokes, cartoons, etc, only the who, what, when and where social events will be.  If you want to be added to this “Coconut Telegraph”, please contact Jennie Curtis at loanbaby@aol.com, Sharon Ramirez at ramirezslr@yahoo.com or Colleen Keener at colleenkeener@live.com.

Announcements:

·      Lost Bay Farms – They are extremely appreciative of our $300 donation. They sent a large poster with many before the tornado and after pictures of the farm

·      Pop Tops – Continue to collect the tops and turn-in at meetings. Cookie Ogden recently turned in 15 Lbs. of pop tops to Ronald MacDonald House.  Thanks for taking them in, Cookie.

·      Jane Tarver mentioned to continue to collect toiletries for Mary’s Shelter and Boy’s Ranch

·      Kim mentioned that so far this year we have performed 895 volunteer hours and we should be well over 1,000 by year-end.

·      A motion was made and seconded to purchase more club shirts for sale. We have so many new members that our inventory has run low.

·      Some members are planning to attend the Halloween costume party at the Flora Bama on Monday, October 31.  Please check the Bama’s web site for details.

Kathy and Malcom Chase donated the great fruitcake basket, complete with a hand-painted beach chair, for our raffle.   Tommy and Judy Rosemond were the lucky winners.  We broke the raffle income record - $230 Way to go phlock.
