July 11, 2009 Meeting Minutes

The July meeting of the Lower Alabama Parrot Heads was called to order at 11:30 AM at Lulu’s.  A Parrot Head welcome to Heidi and Steve Lipe, members of the Parrot Heads of Pensacola, but who would like to also join the LA Parrot Heads.

·      Charity Balance:  $161.50.  A motion was made and passed to hold the charity balance until the end of the hurricane season.  Normally we give it away when we reach a balance of $100.  However, it was stated that the most active part of hurricane season is upon us and we need to save the balance just in case it is needed for hurricanes.  (Of course, we didn’t order any hurricanes this year.)

OLD BUSINESS

·      Trop Rock the Bay:  Scheduled for October 1-3, 2009 in Fairhope.  To register, go to www.troprockthebay.com .  The entertainment line-up includes John Reno (the instigator of this phun event), Brent Burns, Jim Morris, Sunny Jim and others.  Registration and hotel information is available on the website.

·      The members present voted to go on the May 15, 2010 cruise (two dates were tied in the on-line voting).  This is a 7-day cruise out of Mobile.  Stops will be made in Montego Bay, The Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico.  Funny that there is a Margaritaville in every port.  So far, about 20 members have signed up.  To join this phun event, contact Vanessa Moyse with Carnival Cruise Lines (1-800-819-3902, ext 85222).  Be sure and tell her you are with the Lower Alabama Parrot Heads.  For all those going, make sure you have your passport – the rules have changed.

·      PHiP – An interim report is due by the end of July.  Kim Dahlgren will complete this.

NEW BUSINESS

·      Rum Runners is a new bar at the Wharf.  The Vice-President, James Auerbach,  has expressed an interest in working with our club.  They support Parrot Heads in the other areas where they have a presence.   We will continue to cultivate a relationship with them.  They have already committed to something for the STARS goodie bag.

·      The Montgomery club, Isle O’Bama, has scheduled their 9th Annual Luau for August 22, 2009.  Music will be provided by Parrot Tales.  Details are available at www.isleobama.com.

·      The 3rd AnnualPhunfest is scheduled for September 24-26 at Narvarre Beach, FL.  This is hosted by the Emerald Coast Parrot Head Club and Parrot Heads of Pensacola.  There are several great bands.  Check out www.ecparrotheads.org or www.parrotheadsofpensaola.com for additional information.

·      The Coastal Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009.  We will try to get the two islands at the end of Boggy Point in Orange Beach again.  Last year, the boats were provided.  Of course there will be a pool party at Kim and Tyler’s after the cleanup.  More details will follow.

·      Shrimp Fest begins October 8, 2009.  Jane Veillon is the chair and is working on the details.  Once again we will volunteer at the West Beer Tent on Thursday night 6-10 PM and all day on Saturday 10 am – 10 pm.  This is one of our phunest events and one in which we work the hardest.  Last year we raised $800 for Toys for Boys and Girls in Orange Beach.  Do we dare to dream even higher??!!!  We will need our “dancing girls” again this year.

MEETING OF THE MINDS

·      This is scheduled for November 5-11, 009.  If you plan on going to MOTM 2009 “Floridays”, get your registration in.   All information can be found at www.PHiP.com/MOTM.asp.  Our own Charlotte Skinner is the Chair so if you have always wanted to go to MOTM, but just never got around to it, this would be the one to attend.  We all know that Charlotte (MotherHen) will do an awesome job.

STARS FELL ON ALABAMA

·      SOLD OUT!!!  In record time.  The Island House sold out in 72 hours.  Registration was sold out in less than three weeks.  Kim Dahlgren has written a letter to the Orange Beach City Council just to let them know how quick we sold out.

·      After some discussion, the charities were selected for STARS.  They are as follows:  BARC (Baldwin Area Rescue Center), The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, the Volunteer Fire Departments of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and Mary’s Shelter.

·      Bubba Ray and Gerald Ogden have agreed to be our representatives at the Club Leaders Brunch.  This is where they have the t-shirt exchange where our t-shirts proved to be the most coveted.  We will be providing 6-8 shirts for the exchange.

·      The committees are in need of volunteers.  Jenny and Jim Curtis have once again donated their condo in Puerto Vallarta, with the stipulation that they have some help selling the raffle tickets.  Lists will be circulated in the coming months for volunteers.  Selling raffle tickets is a great way to meet new people.

·      It is now time to start gathering stuff for the silent auction, raffle bags and goodie bags.   And don’t forget the logos for the back of the shirt.  Remember, you do not have to provide the whole basket, maybe just some items that will morph into a larger basket.  For the raffle bags, we need ten (10) of each item.  For the goodie bags, we need 450 of each item.  It is not to soon to be searching and gathering.  A letter will be provided by the STARS Board which will detail everything we need.

·      The next STARS Board meeting is scheduled for August 23.   All members are welcome to attend.

RAFFLE BASKET:

·      The raffle basket was so generously donated by Jenny & Jim Curtis (thank you Ridge for going back to get it).  It was won by Debbie Ensor.  A total of $79 was raised.  PHINS UP!
