BUSINESS:
1. Passings: Kim reported the sad news that Brent Burns’s parents had recently passed away within days of each other. They had been married for over 70 years. The Trop Rock family also lost Troy Allen and David “Coconut Dave” Waugh.
2. Meeting of the Minds: Charlotte Skinner reported on this year’s “Meeting of the Minds” in Key West. As usual it was a great event with two important items to report. Our own “Stars Fell on Alabama” event was voted as the best PH event in the country and Brent Burns’s song and album “Beach In My Backyard” was voted #1 Trop-Rock song and album of 2010.
3. Shrimp Fest: “Plane Jane” reported a successful event for the club. The Shrimp-Fest officials were very pleased with our support and asked if could please participate next year. A total of $640 was in tips was raised in this event. A special Phins Up to Plane Jane for organizing the event for us.
4. Bay Minette Christmas Parade: Kim announced that we were again invited to judge the Christmas Parade floats in Bay Minette. The event will take place on December 4th. A sign-up sheet was passed around and many more have signed up then we had in previous years. As Kim was reporting on the Bay Minette parade, Jamie Tillery and her husband joined our meeting. The timing was perfect. Jamie is the Mayor of Bay Minette and also a member of our club.
5. Noon Year’s Eve: We will again support LuLu’s in putting on this event. The date is December 31st from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A sign up sheet was passed around. If you want to participate and did not get an opportunity to sign up, please e-mail Kim at kim26607@yahoo.com.
6. Polar Bear Dip: The Parrot Heads of Pensacola have accepted our challenge for the Flora-Bama event. We understand the some of their members will be having a party the night before at Margaritaville on Pensacola Beach. This may be the opening we have been looking for. Let’s beat them and get $100 for our charities this (next) year. Please meet at the foot of the dune walk at the Flora-Bama at 12:30 for a headcount.
7. Christmas Party: Our Christmas party will again be held at the Bear Point Community Center clubhouse. The date is Saturday December 11th, from 1PM to 4PM. Unfortunately, the venue rental has increased to $230. A different venue was investigated, but this was still the best price on the Island. Please contact Hurricane Jane and let her know what you are bringing to share. Please bring whatever you want to drink – ice will be provided. Donations, both non-perishable items or financial, will be accepted for the Ecumenical Ministries. There will be a Rasta (Dirty) Santa, so bring a $15.00 present for the festivities.
8. Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo: David Hall, Development Director, told us about the plans to the zoo to be built on Highway 59 at County Road 4. He also directed a “field trip” to the parking lot to look at the Founder’s Rock. After his presentation the club unanimously voted to buy a “Founder’s Rock” which will be in place at a prominent spot in the new zoo for 10 years. The cost is $10,000, payable in $1,000 increments over 10 years. If, for some reason, the club cannot meet the future obligations of the Founder’s Rock, the remaining years will be sold to another sponsor, but the Lower Alabama Parrot Heads will forever be founders of the new Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.
9. Charitable Contributions: The following contributions were approved by vote:
Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo $1,000.00
(Initial Payment for Founder’s Rock)
Toys for Boys & Girls $ 800.00
(Orange Beach Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary – proceeds from Shrimp Fest)
The tips collected at Shrimp Fest were rounded up to the amount contributed last year to Toys for Boys & Girls.
Troy Allen Family $ 100.00
David Waugh Family $ 100.00
Mary’s Shelter $ 300.00
10. Pop-Tops: The Ronald McDonald House thanked us for the large donation of pop-tops. Keep them coming. They said “Wow, what a terrific donation of tab tops!” I don’t know how many pounds we had, but Cookie needed two hands to carry them. Thanks Cookie for taking them to Mobile.
