May 2 Lulu Bike Ride Volunteers
Lower Alabama Parrot Heads LuLu’s Restaurant – Gulf Shores Minutes of the Meeting May 8, 2010 Welcome to our newest members, Don & Merilee Chambers. There were approximately 27 members at the meeting. A small, but lively group. Treasurer’s Report – Hurricane Jane Tarver Balance Forward 4/10 $3,923.30 Deposits 2,653.00 Expenses (38.25) Balance as of 5/8/10 $6,538.05 Charity Balance (included in above figures): $126.50 The Charity Balance will be held until the total amount reaches $100. At which time, the money will be distributed to charity. The switch to Wachovia from Whitney Bank is almost complete Stars Fell on Alabama: The total amount raised from STARS is (drum roll please) $10,000! YEAH!!!! The Lower Alabama Parrot Heads received 25% or $2,500. As per the April meeting, this will be divided equally between the 5 recipients, this amounts to $500 each. But wait there is more. Because we have been so successful, it was voted to add an additional $250, for a total of $750 for each recipient. A total of $3,750 was donated to the following organizations: Baldwin Area Rescue Center (BARC) $750.00 Mary’s Shelter $750.00 Gulf Shores Volunteer Fire Department $750.00 Orange Beach Volunteer Fire Department $750.00 Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo $750.00 Way to go everybody. Plans are underway for STARS 2011. Mardi Gras is late next year. STARS and the Flora –Bama Mullet Toss are working around the calendar. BARC is having an event on May 15th at the Foley Post Office, to collect food for the new Pet Pantry. We will present their check to them on that day along with food. If you wish to participate, please be at the Foley Post Office at 10 AM to present the check. Hurricane Jane will take Mary’s Shelter’s check to them. The to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo was accepted by Queen Nairobi, the African serval. Kim Dahlgren will deliver the checks for the Volunteer Fire Departments of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. In lieu of the oil spill, a management decision was made not to invite the Hunky Firemen to the meeting. They have a lot of things on their plate. Shrimp Festival: No reply from the letter sent regarding our bad experiences as volunteers. Letters were sent to several officials including the new president of the Chamber. Oil Spill: All volunteer efforts for the oil spill are on hold. BP has hired a private firm, Tri-State, to handle the oiled wildlife. It is illegal to touch any oiled native wildlife. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has offered the new hurricane facility on County Road 6 to help wash any wildlife. To date, they have not heard anything from anybody. Unlike a hurricane, this disaster is man-made with a responsible party. The most important thing that the city leaders are saying that we can do is to promote the area. Tweet, Twitter and e-mail all your phrineds and send pictures. Tell them how beautiful our beaches and water is. Also send e-mails to the networks, CNN, NBC, CBS, FOX and ABC. Currently, the national press is causing the most damage to our area. Just let everybody know that we are open for business. Tell us what you can when you get back. What happens on the cruise – stays on the cruise. Smart Ride: The First Annual Smart Ride from Page & Palette to LuLu’s was a success. Johnny Fisher said they had about 150 riders and they couldn’t have done it without the Parrot Heads. We manned several turns on the route – made sure the riders went the right way and didn’t get hit by cars. Next year’s date is May 2 and LuLu’s has already started the planning. Thanks to Plane Jane for chairing this event. She even got a shout out in the Letters to the Editor in the Press Register for her help. Way to go Jane!! Fundraiser: A fundraiser will be held on Sunday May 23 from noon to 5 PM for Sarah Kelly a, 17 year-old who was diagnosed with Leukemia 2 days before Thanksgiving. Nora Sheen, at St. Charles Place, is spearheading this fundraiser. Nora has asked the Lower Alabama Parrot Heads to help. In fact, she made sure the day of the event was separate from STARS. St. Charles Place and Nora have been very big supporters of Stars Fell on Alabama. It is now our turn to give back. She will need some help setting up, tearing down and with the “Chinese” auction. If you would like to help, please contact Kim Dahlgren at kim26607@yahoo.com or 609-7330. The event will include a bake sale, hotdogs, burgers and other food, as well as a live auction. There will also be books signings by local authors and live music. It will be phun event and help one of our own. Coastal Cleanup: Mark your calendars – this event is scheduled for September 10. MS Bike Tour: Again – Mark your calendars – this event is scheduled for September 18/19. We have a busy September. Magic City Parrot Head Club: Wastin’ Away in Margaritaham is scheduled for May 22. Please check www.mcphc.com for more information. WalMart: Several members received $5 gift cards in the mail. There was some confusion at the beginning because the mailer said the ‘WalMart in Gulf Shores.” The fine print said “any WalMart or Sams”. Nine of these cards were collected and will be donated to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. PHiNs Fund: A vote was taken to donate $100 to the PHiNs Fund to go towards helping the Parrot Heads in Tennessee that have been affected by the floods. The PHiNs Fund is specifically for Parrot Heads who have suffered from disasters. When a disaster strikes, Parrot Heads in need of help must fill out an application from Parrot Heads in Paradise. This money will not make them well, but it will help them get started on the road to recovery. With the oil spill and hurricane season approaching, it could be our turn at some point – we hope not! Pop Tops: Keep saving those pop tops. The Ronald McDonald House uses these to help support their efforts. The pop top is worth more that then whole can Raffle: The raffle this month was generously provided by Ellen Murphy and won by Camille Warren. A total of $84 was collected – this is $1 more than last month – goal pushed by the club members present . Thank you for being such a generous group. The next meeting will be on June 12th at 11:15 AM at LuLu’s. See ya there!!
